An exciting opportunity to assist in the establishment of a state-of-the-art scientific computing core facility, employing HPC equipment, for research projects demanding supercomputing,
We are seeking an experienced Head of High Performance Computing to establish, manage, develop and administer the HPC service and be responsible for Linux support services to researchers.
Ideally someone with a background in HPC centres within Academia. or Biological / Medical Research utilising HPC and with an appreciation for Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biology.
The post holder will be responsible for the cost-effective construction, deployment, long-term development and administration of our new federated HPC infrastructure and will work in close collaboration with research teams using HPC and other research groups within.
The post holder will work closely with the Director of Research to identify research computing priorities across the organisation and the resources required to deliver them.
The post holder will be the key link between Scientific Computing and the core IT service, with a major role in aligning the work of the IT team to support the Institute’s scientific computing priorities.
S/he will also have line management responsibility for the Scientific Computing Team.
Candidates must have:A successful track record and sound experience in administering HPC UNIX based systems.
Development, support, parallelisation, optimisation and benchmarking of scientific applications and codes
Parallel computing environments, associated system architectures and virtualisation technologies.
Essential; BSc in Computer Science / Physics / Biology or associated discipline.
Preferable; PhD in Computer Science / Physics / Biology or associated discipline.
Experience of managing a high performance computing installation, to include installation, benchmarking, code optimisation, user transitions and utilisation expansion Systems engineering experience in the evaluation of systems to meet customer requirements for large fileservers, mass storage systems, and high speed networks
Deployment of scientific research application on HPC systems and working in an academic research lab.
HPC file-systems, such as Lustre/XFSC/GPFS and hierarchical storage solutions
Compiling, installing, and porting software
Batch schedulers (particularly PBS, MOAB and SGE)
Enterprise level directory services (AD & LDAP)
Compiled language programming e.g. C/C++, shell scripting and porting
Range of technologies including:
High performance computing
Networking and firewalls
Remote access technologies
Large scale data management solutions Virtualisation technologies
People management experience
Budget management experience
Project delivery experience
