Commercial Manager / Director - BioRefinery

My client is currently seeking applications for a newly created position of Commercial Manager, the role specifically being to take a new technology into a high-growth spin-out company. The commercialisation activity is part of a Proof of Concept project funded by Government.

The Commercial Manager will lead the strategy and business development of the proposed spin-out company to generate investment sufficient to place the company on a trajectory of high growth and scale. In the initial, pre-spin-out phase, this appointment will be in a consultancy capacity to work with the academic institute's team.

You will be an experienced entrepreneurial individual with a proven track record in generating finance and the successful development of technology-related businesses, who can build upon relevant strategic networks to promote the technology externally to key partners, customers and investors. A key part of the role will involve negotiation licensing technology. Additionally, you will work with the experienced leadership team and must be willing and capable of mentoring the academic team, ensuring transfer of knowledge and experience.

The technology is integrated and flexible product mix fermentation processes for fuel (bioethanol), high value protein rich meat substitutes and animal feed from low cost substrates. This has the potential to significantly increase the profitability of a bioethanol refinery increasing the operating margin. The business model will be licensing with consultancy to secure high-value technology jobs in Scotland, further research and intellectual property development.

Skills/Experience

The ideal candidate will meet most of the following criteria:

* Strong commercial credentials and track record operating at strategic level
* Proven track record of raising equity funding from venture capital providers, ideally corporate VC and/or business angels
* Excellent leadership qualities and strong interpersonal skills
* Network of relevant strategic contacts, including potential customers, development partners and investors
* Ability to clearly articulate core value propositions and develop and optimise corresponding business models
* Experience of the corporate governance and financial management obligations of managing an SME, ideally as a company executive director

Sector experience in Bio refining, food, animal feedstuff and pharmaceuticals is highly desirable.
