Snr/Mid-weight Backend Developer - Remote (Java/Node.js/AWS) - Surrey

GBP 60 to 75k DOE

My client, an award-winning Publishing House, is on the lookout for an experienced Mid-weight and a Snr Back End Developer with an interest in working across the Full Stack.

This role is based predominantly at home and limited travel to London is needed once we return to a new normal.

You will join a small, agile development team that is helping evolve our sites. This role provide an exciting opportunity to work on the redesign of our news websites so they better reflect the brands they are associated with and create a positive experience which readers remember.

We are also looking for a Back End Developer so please also apply via this advert if you are interested in this role.

What does the role involve?

The roles will involve contributing to the Actionable Journalism project, which will enable users to take relevant and rewarding actions in response to articles, such as signing petitions, completing polls or quizzes, and purchasing related products. Following on from work on the redesign will be an opportunity to contribute to a re-platform to provide the future foundation to deliver our content at our considerable scale.

The main products use a Java-based CMS, running in Tomcat and hosted in AWS. This is used for both content creation and delivering the presentation layer. The trend in recent years has been away from a Java monolith towards Node.js based systems and microservices. They are currently planning a more extensive re-platform which will accelerate this trend towards cloud native architectures.

Their preferred way to run application code has become to run it either in a Docker container running in ECS or in a Lambda function. They extensively leverage other AWS services including RDS, CloudFront, DynamoDB, CloudFormation, CloudWatch and so on. Our client are strong believers in DevOps principles and infrastructure as code, and are continuously trying to improve in that direction.

The ideal candidate for this position will:

Be experienced in Java application development with an interest in working across the full stack.

Have an interest in working with Node.js.

Have an understanding of HTTP, caching and how the web works.

Have experience with backend build systems and with automated testing.

Work collaboratively within an agile web development team, be self-directed and be happy to work on their own initiative.

Any of the following would also be useful:

Experience in building cloud native systems in AWS.

Involvement with high traffic systems.

Experience with Infrastructure as Code.

Knowledge of GraphQL.

Experience configuring CI/CD pipelines.
