Smurfit Kappa is one of the leading global providers of paper-based packaging solutions in the world, with around 46,000 employees, in approximately 370 production sites, across 35 countries, with revenue of €8.9 billion in 2018. A rare opportunity for a General Manager, with P&L responsibility, has arisen within the £9m p.a. t/o speciality Whitehaven plant, which employs 80 people operating on a flexible, 2 shift/5 day system producing award winning, composite carton board tubes, (and metal ends), for the whisky, distillery, giftware and DIY industrial markets

Your challenge will be to develop and own the strategic plan to grow its profitable position, modernise and expand the business, with a focus on sales growth, operations and financial control and take it to the next level of profitability, whilst delivering operational excellence and exceptional customer understanding and service.

Through a senior team comprising Sales Director, Financial Controller, Manufacturing Manager, Commercial Manager, Customer Accounts Manager, QA Manager and H&S Manager, you will provide engaging and empowering leadership to ensure that the site team is motivated to deliver against this plan. A key focus will be within operations to improve efficiencies, planning and output through the introduction of Lean methodology. You will also gain insights into customer environments to ensure that the business anticipates and meets their needs. You must also be capable of internal networking to forge strong links and provide input into wider cohesive strategies across the company’s Division. The site is Unionised – UNITE and has Investors in People accreditation.

Ideally educated to degree level, applicants will have experience of operating at General Manager level preferably in a packaging environment e.g. corrugated, cartons, POS, plastics etc. or wider manufacturing sector, combined with the ability to interpret management information, set objectives, measure performance and make decisions, which will have significant financial impact on the business. Strong Operations Directors with strong commercial acumen will also be considered. A commercial approach, lateral thinking and well-developed leadership and communication skills are a pre-requisite.
